What The Words “Spanish Fly” Mean

14182519157_e27619dc14_bWhen someone says “Spanish fly” what do you think of? Do you think of a fly that’s Spanish? Do you think of the aphrodisiac supplement called Spanish Fly?

Originally, Spanish Fly referred to a green blister beetle. They’re called blister beetles because they’re poisonous: they secrete a blistering agent known as cantharidin. There are several species in the US.

Worldwide, there are about 7,500 species of thee blister beetles that are known to exist. The Spanish fly is one of these, known for it’s distinctively green color.

They can range from 1cm to about 2.5cm, are soft-bodied, and during the day, they can be seen on flowers. At night, they’re usually attracted to lights. Although the Spanish fly beetle is green, other species of the blister beetle are ash fray to bright yellow with black stripes.

Although the poisoning, blistering agent of blister beetles can be deadly, interestingly, it’s known for another property: aphrodisiac.

Increased blood flow to the genitals is one effect of cantharidin passing through the body. This is due to irrigation of the genitalia.

That’s why, throughout the ages, desiccated Spanish flies have been used as aphrodisiacs. This use spans back to the classical civilizations of the Mediterranean.

However, since cantharidin is a known toxin, it’s use as an aphrodisiac has been somewhat limited. There was a great challenge in trying to use it for it’s desired effect, without ingesting a lethal dosage of it.

This main secretion of the Spanish fly also has another use: as a topical application for treating warts. It can also be used to raise blisters.

Believe it or not, in North Africa, spices containing cantharides were actually sold. However, since the 1990s, that’s been banned.

They’ve also been used to make incense and the world’s first stink bomb.

Today, the meaning of the term Spanish fly depends on it’s context. As you know, if it’s used when speaking about insects and poisons, then the blister beetle is probably what’s referred to. Otherwise, the aphrodisiac supplement called Spanish Fly Pro may be what’s referred to.

Improving Sexual Health Naturally

A recent Ipsos Reid survey revealed the majority of Canadians over the age of 40 often feel “too tired” to have sex. Few things invigorate quite like a roll in the hay — which means it’s definitely time to take a look at the diet factors behind this sad-but-true sex drive stall.

Foods That Affect Sexual Health:

Empty calories and greasy treats just don’t cut it in the boudoir, and not simply because poor eating contributes to an expanding waistline and crumby sheets kill the mood. Saturated fats and sugar zap the body’s stores of zinc, which is a key player in all things amorous.

Zinc:

  • improves sex drive
  • regulates sperm function
  • increases fertility
  • heightens the senses of taste and smell

How to Get Zinc:

  1. brown rice
  2. sesame seeds
  3. poultry
  4. cheese
  5. oysters (“Oysters contain the highest amount of zinc available in a food source,” says Dr. Millie Lytle, naturopath, Toronto.)
  6. Other types of seafood, such as crab, scallops or mussels

More Foods That Improve Sexual Health:

  • figs
  • bananas
  • lean meats
  • leafy greens

Factors That Can Decrease a Woman’s Sex Drive, and What To Do:

Hormonal imbalances brought on by pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, menopause or the stresses of everyday life can put the kibosh on lust. Diet changes and herbal supplements are one way to make a difference:

  • Omega-3’s and -6’s are very important for females because they tend to be found in phytoestrogen food sources such as flax and borage seeds and good quality soy products like miso, tempeh and naturally fermented tofu,” says Dr. Lytle. These phytoestrogens boost the female libido and help alleviate the sex drive sapping symptoms of menopause by balancing estrogen.
  • Wild yam supplements are another wise choice for women who yearn to reignite their ardor. This plant contains progesterone friendly phytonutrients and can address a cornucopia of woes associated with hormone deficiencies, including increased body fat, migraines, water retention, dysmenorea and, of course, loss of sex drive.

The Benefits of Having an Active Sex Life

Sure, there are people who choose to vow chastity for various reasons, and although this can be respected, there is so much benefit that can come from having an active sex life.

Improve the Senses

The feeling after sex is quite simply indescribable; however, not only does it leave you with an amazing feeling throughout your body, believe it or not it actually increases your sense of smell. Although this is probably the last thing you are thinking about after experiencing mind shattering, knee knocking, finger tingling sex, you will have produced the hormone ‘prolactin surges’. Alan Farnham in his article ‘Is Sex Necessary’ (Forbes.com) describes this hormone as causing stem cells in your brain to develop new neurons in the brain’s olfactory bulb (its smell centre).

General Fitness

Not only does sex improve the senses, it also contributes to the minimum recommended guidance of how much physical exercise you should be doing in a given week, which aims to combat related diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure or strokes. The American College of Sports Medicine provides guidance to include 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week of moderately intense cardio, or 20 minutes, 3 days a week of vigorously intense cardio per week.

The thought of going to the gym, going for countless runs around the block, or dusting off and using your purchased home gym equipment may seem unfavourable due to the fact your current lifestyle simply will not allow you to get into this type of routine. However sex is not only proven to burn over 200 calories per vigorous session (Alan Farnham, Forbes.com), you will more than likely enjoy it a lot more than taking a run around the block, where the only sounds you’ll be experiencing are the sounds coming from your iPod!

Why Some Relationships Move Faster Than Others

Anyone who has been involved in multiple love affairs can say that some simply progress faster than others. Whether they are on-the-spot connections and miracle matching interests, or slow burning long-term relationships, the dynamics of love affairs often extend to the amount of time that it takes to build a close connection.

For those who are trying to forge long-term bonds, understanding why some romances will move faster than others is absolutely essential for creating something that won’t falter under pressure, and can easily survive for the long-term.

There are hundreds of factors that contribute to a relationship’s dynamics, particularly the speed of connection and comfort. However, the three most important are listed and explained below. While they complimented by other factors, these three stand as the most important.

Proximity Between Couples

It can be observed that relationships move much faster in college. One day, two people were casually chatting on the way home from class and, the next day, they both felt like they had known each other for months already.

Proximity affects the way people view each other, primarily because they see so much more of each other, and effectively learn so much more in a shorter time period. When people live near someone or see a lot of them, everything is thrown at them more quickly. Just like language learners master foreign words faster with immersion, people’s minds adapt much more quickly to new people when they are exposed to them more often.

Weighing a Relationship: Ending a Romantic Relationship

Relationships, particularly long-term relationships, can be difficult to handle. At times, a person may wonder if the other person is right for her. Breaking up is difficult, and should be carefully considered beforehand so as to minimize the chance of regrets later on.

Things to Consider About a Relationship

The first and foremost thing to think about is if the relationship is enjoyable. Everyone argues sometimes, and having different likes and dislikes does not automatically mean a relationship will not work out. However, there should be more good times than bad, hopefully many more good times. If a relationship feels like nothing but work, it may be time to move on.

For a long-term relationship to work well, it’s a good idea if the two people involved have similar levels of ambition and compatible goals. If one person has his heart set on a jet set lifestyle and has a ten-year plan to accomplish that goal, while the other person is content to live a much simpler, less money focused lifestyle, there may be friction down the road. Either road is fine, but it helps if both people are on the same one.

This is true for goals as far as the relationship, as well. If one partner desperately wants children while the other partner has no desire for them, one person will always be unhappy. The same applies for ideas about relationship status. Some people feel strongly that marriage is the ultimate goal in a relationship, and if the other person sees it as unnecessary, there is often going to be a problem.

Opposites do tend to attract, and most people know a couple that seem all wrong for each other and yet have been blissfully married for years. This can happen, but often the differences that attract two people can eventually make the relationship difficult. Coming from similar backgrounds and families can be helpful in a relationship. It’s also good if the partners like each other’s friends and enjoy spending time with the family.
